      Grand Master Mark Chan

 At the age of 8, Master Mark Chan Wah started intense training in the styles of Hung Gar, Choy Lee Fut, & Five Animal Sil Lum Kung Fu, which he learned from his Grandfather, Grand Master Wong Cheun Yip. In addition to Kung Fu skills he also learned the ancient art of hit medicine and bone setting from his Grandfather. Grand Master Wong was the local authority and the resident Kung Fu master of Chil Chung village in the Toisan district until his death at the age of 86 in 1962.

 

 In the early 1950's Sifu Chan escaped from the Toisan region and traveled to Hong Kong where he began extensive training in Kung Fu styles including Southern Dragon (Lung Ying Mor Kiew) & White Eyebrow (Bak Mei), Wing Chun and Hung Gar under some of the greatest Kung Fu masters of the 20th century. 

 

 Sifu Chan then came to Canada in the late 1950's and began teaching Kung Fu in Edmonton's Chinatown. During this period Master Chan was the chief instructor of the local Chinese cultural association, teaching Lion Dancing, Kung Fu, & self-defense. In 1971 the Green Dragon Kung Fu Association school opened and Master Chan became one of the first masters in Canada to teach Kung Fu to non-Chinese students. Unfortunately this upset some, and he was forced to use his Kung Fu skills to defend his club's territory and restaurant business much as his Grandfather Wong Cheun Yip had done many years before in their village.
